“Proslavery Men Voting in Kansas,” c. 1855

Northerners were influenced not just by the accounts they read of events in Kansas Territory but also by visual images such as this cartoon. Drawings such as this appeared in national magazines and in books written by those sympathetic to the northern settlers in the territory. Most political cartooning was done in northern cities such as Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, so images in national magazines often represented a northern view of political conflicts.
