Excerpt from Kansas Territorial Census, District 8, February 1855

In preparation for the election of a territorial legislature, the territorial governor ordered a census of residents in the territory. The primary purpose was to ascertain the number of voters—white men over age twenty-one. But the census contained a wealth of information about the settlers: their previous residences, ages, sexes, races, and occupations. The original census can be viewed here.
