Historians use primary documents to develop an understanding about cause and effect. This exercise does the same, here asking “what caused the Civil War?” This exercise also helps hone critical thinking skills. In evaluating each document, consider the following: Who wrote this? When did he write it, and what else was happening around that time? What was the purpose of this writing, and what was it intended to do? Who was the audience for this? Is there change over time?
