War Department, Commission on Training Camp Activities, When You Go Home — Take This Book with You, 1918

The CTCA, the U.S. Public Health Service, and voluntary social hygiene associations such as the American Social Hygiene Association became increasingly concerned with maintaining the nation’s moral and physical health as the country entered World War I. Within this context, venereal disease rates among men in the military caused a social panic that led to the creation of the CTCA. The commission provided “wholesome” recreational activities for soldiers on the home front to prevent military men from seeking sexual relations with prostitutes or women deemed “immoral.” This pamphlet instructs soldiers on the importance of remaining free of venereal disease upon their return from war.
