Richard Fayerweather Babcock, “Join the Navy, the Service for Fighting Men,” 1917

Like “It’s Up to You—Protect the Nation’s Honor,” this poster encouraged American men to enlist for service in the U.S. military. The male figure depicted in this poster, however, is presented in a very different manner from the elderly Uncle Sam image in “It’s Up to You.” As the discrepancy suggests, different conceptions about manliness and masculinity coexisted in American wartime culture.
