Additional Assignments

  1. Using the historian’s skills, craft an analytical essay that references some of the primary sources to illustrate how black soldiers and veterans demanded full citizenship and equal rights after their participation in the armed forces. Cite all sources and include evidence from the number of primary sources in this unit. You do not need to include every soldier’s story, but your essay should include a story arc (Google this term for visual representations) and link someone from the documents to the history of the desegregation of America.
  2. Create a visual presentation (.ppt, prezi, keynote, .mov, podcast, app, or Web log) that links black soldiers and veterans to the Long Civil Rights Movement. Your presentation must include a voice-over narration, notes on a presentation page, or a storyline on a visual medium. You do not need to include every soldier’s story, but your creative project should include a story arc (Google this term for graphic explanation) and link someone from the documents to the history of the desegregation of America.
You have resources from this unit, such as YouTube clips, and transcripts of the oral histories; plus, images from the Library of Congress of black soldiers (www.loc.gov/pictures/related/?fi=subject&q=African%20Americans--Military%20service--1940-1950.&op=EQUAL) and also of the civil rights movement (www.loc.gov/pictures/related/?fi=subject&q=African%20Americans--Civil%20rights--1950-1970).
