Learning by Doing: Making Columns of Appeals

Use columns to help you write about your logical, emotional, and ethical appeals. Go to the Format menu in your word processor, select Columns, and click on the preset three-column pattern. (Or draw three columns on paper.) Under “Logical Appeals,” write the claims and support that rely on reasoning and sound evidence. Under “Emotional Appeals,” note the claims and support that may affect readers’ emotions. Under “Ethical Appeals,” add your claims and support based on values, both your values and those of opposing points of view as you understand them. As you reread each column, consider how to relate your claims and support across columns, how to organize your ideas persuasively, and how best to merge or separate your logical, emotional, and ethical appeals. Add color coding if you want to identify related ideas.
