Learning from Other Writers
The writers of the following two essays propose sensible solutions for pressing problems. To help you begin to analyze the first reading, look at the notes in the margin. They identify features such as the introduction of the problem, thesis, or main idea, and the introduction of the proposed solution.
As You Read These Proposals
Ask yourself the following questions:
What problem does the writer identify? Does the writer rouse you to want to do something about the problem?
What solution does the writer propose? What evidence supports the solution? Does the writer convince you to agree with this solution?
How is the writer qualified to write on this subject?
