Additional Writing Activities

  1. Source Activity. Select an essay from this book. Annotate the reading, marking both its key ideas and your own reactions to it. Review the text and your annotations, and then write two paragraphs, one summarizing the reading and the other explaining your personal response to it.

  2. Source Activity. Follow up on Activity 1, working with others who have responded to the same essay. Share your summaries, noting the strengths of each. Then develop a collaborative summary that briefly and fairly presents the main points of the reading. (You can merge your existing summaries or make a fresh start.) When you finish the group summary, decide which methods of summarizing work best.

  3. Source Activity. Follow up on Activity 1 by adding a critical reading analysis and response.

  4. Source Activity. Select a passage from the textbook or readings for another course you are taking or have taken. Annotate the passage, and make some notes using the Critical Reading Checklist and the Writing Strategies Checklist as guides. Pay special attention to the reading’s purpose and its assumptions about its audience. Write a paragraph or two about your critical examination of the passage.

    Visual Activity. Select a Web page, blog entry, YouTube video, photo from an online gallery, social media post, or another brief online text.“Read” this text critically, adapting reading processes and skills from this chapter. Write a short summary and response, including a link or a printout of the page or section to which you have responded.
