The Environmental Protection Agency is a government agency originally formed in the 1970s when people began to be concerned about pollution. Their stated mission is to “protect human health and the environment.” Included below are two texts from the EPA Web site. The first is an excerpt from an educational comic, “The Adventures of the Garbage Gremlin” that promotes recycling to general readers, specifically to young students. The second is a pie chart from the agency’s latest “Municipal Solid Waste” report aimed at general readers. It illustrates the percentage of U.S. waste generated annually; according to the chart, paper accounts for the largest percentage of waste. The following comic strip and chart appear courtesy of the Environmental Protection Agency.
