[RESPOND] Consider possible topics: Explaining a health- or behavior-related concept.

E-Page 34

Beck and other journalists covering health and behavioral issues frequently investigate causes and effects to explain concepts. For instance, a writer seeking to explain antibiotic resistance might look at such causes as overprescription of antibiotics, overuse of these drugs in livestock, and mutations in bacteria. The writer would also examine the effects of these phenomena. Alternatively, a writer seeking to explain hoarding might look at such possible causes as personal and family history, as well as neuropsychological factors. Pick a concept related to human health or behavior that intrigues you. Then, in an essay, explain the concept to someone who is entirely unfamiliar with it. In doing so, make sure to provide a focused explanation, to present the causes and effects supporting the explanation clearly and logically, and to integrate any source material smoothly.
