Chapter 10 Looking Back and Looking Ahead

In Chapter 1, you learned that psychology is diverse. Some psychologists study brains, and others study cultures. Some do basic research, and others apply psychological knowledge to practical problems. As you’ve seen in this chapter, the study of emotion is a microcosm of psychology as a whole, with emotion researchers tackling an extraordinarily wide range of problems, from basic questions about the causes of emotion to practical questions about reducing stress and improving health.

Although this ends our chapter, it’s not the last you’ll see of emotions. Developmental psychologists study growth in children’s ability to control their emotional reactions. Personality theorists explore how emotions are one facet of the individual as a whole. And clinical psychologists seek therapies that empower people to gain control of their emotional lives.
