Chapter Recap

CHAPTER RECAP

  • There are two types of mediated communication: mass media and social media. Social media help you meet your instrumental, relationship, and self-presentation goals.

  • Since social media can limit the amount of nonverbal information you receive, the social information processing theory suggests that you compensate for this by taking more care with the words you choose to use.

  • When creating and managing your online face, remember the three Ps of mediated communication for any content you post—powerful, public, and permanent.

  • Online disinhibition and empathy deficits are two possible causes of mediated communication challenges, such as digital deception, flaming, trolling, online harassment, and cyberbullying.

  • Knowing how to competently use mediated communication can help you improve your relationships, your work life, and your online presentation skills.

  1. Analyzing Your Online Face

    Question

Take one of your online profiles for a social media site—Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google+. Working with a classmate, use the three Ps of mediated communication—powerful, public, and permanent—to evaluate each other’s profile. What face do you perceive your partner to have? Is it accurate? Based on what your partner perceived, how can you improve your profile?

  2. Flaming and Trolling in Action

    Question

Look at the discussion thread in the comment section of a recent online news article about a controversial topic (e.g., www.washingtonpost.com or www.nytimes.com). Identify any instances of flaming, trolling, or harassment, and analyze how other commenters responded to these posts. Work with a small group of classmates to prepare a group report on how these comments worked with or violated the guidelines for mediated communication competence suggested in this chapter. Present the report in class.
