Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: Practical Use of the Cognitive and Behavioral Models

Aaron Beck, a psychiatrist by training, has pioneered the development of cognitive therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy. A great deal of research has been conducted by a variety of clinical researchers to support the efficacy of cognitive therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy for a multitude of mental health issues and diagnoses (e.g., depression; Beck & Weishaar, 2014). As stated in Chapter 3, cognitive therapy attempts to assist clients in recognizing negative thoughts, cognitive distortions, and errors in interpretation, while developing the skills to challenge their dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs in order to reduce psychological symptoms. The cognitive-behavioral approach utilizes both facets of the cognitive model and the behavioral model to assess and treat both distortions in thought and unhealthy behaviors that may be unconsciously reinforced.

How would you know if it would be in your best interest to be in a combined treatment (therapy and medication) therapy program or in just one type of treatment (therapy or medication)?
One possible answer might be that it would be a good idea to discuss treatment efficacy or effectiveness for your specific symptoms with your therapist to determine which option has resulted in the most improvement for patients similar to yourself. You may also consider a psychiatric consultation to determine further options.

One possible answer might be that No, it does not mean you will never feel better. It could take 6 to 8 weeks before you start to see noticeable symptom reduction or improvement. In addition, adding medication may need to be considered as an adjunct to CBT treatment. Also, if you have not been attending sessions regularly or are not completing your homework assignments to the best of your ability, your timeline of improvement could also be affected.
