Self-Monitoring Test

To test your own perceived level of self-monitoring, complete the following items, being careful to answer them as accurately and truthfully as possible. Use a 5-point scale for your answers: 5 = strongly agree; 4 = agree; 3 = neither agree nor disagree; 2 = disagree; and 1 = strongly disagree.

1. I am concerned about acting appropriately in social situations.

2. I find it hard to imitate the behavior of others.

3. I have good self-control of my behavior. I can play many roles.

4. I am not very good at learning what is socially appropriate in new situations.

5. I often appear to lack deep emotions.

6. In a group of people, I am rarely the center of attention.

7. I may deceive people by being friendly when I really dislike them.

8. Even if I am not enjoying myself, I often pretend to be having a good time.

9. I have good self-control of my emotional expression. I can use it to create the impression I want.

10. I can argue only for ideas that I already believe in.

11. I openly express my true feelings, attitudes, and beliefs.

12. Iā€™m not always the person I appear to be.
