Your Listening Apprehension

Lawrence Wheeless has developed a test that identifies listening areas that can cause apprehension. Some of these areas are listed below. Answer the following questions to get an idea of your listening-apprehension level.

Score your answers to the following questions according to whether you strongly agree (1), agree (2), are undecided (3), disagree (4), or strongly disagree (5).

1. I am not afraid to listen as a member of an audience.

2. I feel relaxed when I am listening to new ideas.

3. I generally feel rattled when others are speaking to me.

4. I often feel uncomfortable when I am listening to others.

5. I often have difficulty concentrating on what is being said.

6. I look for opportunities to listen to new ideas.

7. Receiving new information makes me nervous.
