Learning by Doing: Identifying Topic Sentences

Learning by Doing !Learn! Identifying Topic Sentences

A topic sentence states the main idea and the point of a paragraph. Though the topic sentence is often the first sentence of the paragraph, it can also be found in the middle or at the end of the paragraph. Transitions help the reader move from one idea to the next. You can find common transitions on page 297 of The Concise Bedford Guide for Writers.
