Focus Your Thesis Statement

A broad thesis statement does not encourage your readers to learn anything new, change their attitudes or beliefs, or take action. The following thesis statement is too broad.

Broad Thesis Statement

The high rate of unemployment among veterans is a problem that will take effort to solve.

There’s no conversation to be had about this topic because few people would argue with such a statement. A more focused thesis statement would define what should be done and who should do it.

Focused Thesis Statement

Government, business, and nonprofit organizations should address the problem of unemployment among veterans by creating programs that prepare returning veterans for green jobs that benefit both our country and those who have served in its name.

To focus your thesis statement, ask what your readers would want to know about your subject, what attitudes should be changed, or what action should be taken. Consider their likely responses to your thesis statement, and attempt to head off potential counterarguments or questions.
