Align Yourself with an Authority

Aligning yourself with an authority — such as a subject-matter expert, a scientist, a politician, or a religious figure — allows you to borrow someone else’s credibility and status. Start by making an assertion, and follow it with supporting information from a source, such as a quotation, paraphrase, or summary.

Although voice recognition appears to be a promising technology, challenges associated with vocabulary, homonyms, and accents have slowed its widespread implementation. “The computer right now can do a very good job of voice recognition,” said Bill Gates, cofounder and chairman of Microsoft Corporation (59). “It certainly will re-define the way we think of the machines when we have that voice input” (Gates 59).
