Combine Coordination and Subordination in a Compound-Complex Sentence

A sentence with more than one main clause and at least one subordinate clause is called a compound-complex sentence.

It won’t improve your writing to make a habit of constructing elaborate sentences. But it is good to be skilled at turning a group of short, closely related ideas into one compound-complex sentence. In the example above, the writer uses one closely knit sentence to present a problem, give an explanation, and take a stand on an issue.
