Taking on the role of problem solver requires you to understand the nature of problems — an understanding that a surprisingly large number of writers appear to lack. By learning about problems, you can begin to identify and understand them, and even to address them in meaningful ways. Once you gain an understanding of what constitutes a problem, you can begin to look for and learn about problems that intrigue you. In the process, you’ll position yourself to choose a problem to address in your essay.
