The Role of Self-Exploration in Career Planning

Are you self-aware and confident in your skills and abilities? Perhaps you have a friend who always seems to know exactly what he or she wants or can accomplish. As discussed in Chapter 3, how well you know yourself and how effectively you can do the things you need to do are integral to your success, not only as a college student but also as a person. Self-assessment, or the process of gathering information about yourself in order to make an informed career decision, is a good first step in clarifying your academic and career goals. Students enter college at varying levels of self-awareness, and some even have a strong self-image, but most of us continue the process of defining (or redefining) ourselves throughout life. Although you might know some activities you like to do and which activities you are good at doing, you may lack a clear idea of how knowledge of self aligns with different career possibilities.
