Community Service

high-impact practice 5

As a first-year student, one way to get involved with your college or university or with the community is to consider volunteering for a community-service project such as serving the homeless at a soup kitchen or helping to build or renovate homes for needy families. Your campus’s division of student affairs might have a volunteer or community-service office that offers other opportunities such as tutoring elementary school students in literacy skills, working at an after-school program, participating in a campus cleanup, or working at a local animal shelter. You can also check the Volunteer Match Web site (volunteermatch.org) for opportunities in your area. Simply enter your ZIP code and, if you wish, keywords to help you find volunteer work in your field of interest.
