Emotional Intelligence

What is emotional intelligence? Define the most significant abilities of EI and reflect on your connection to those abilities.

Be aware of how your emotions affect the way you react to difficult or frustrating situations. Some key aspects of EI include motivation, resilience, balance, and anger management. Use your awareness to try to control your negative reactions before you get into a potentially frustrating situation.

Identify how you develop EI in college. What can you learn from other students? Think about the most significant ways you have developed since you started college.

Evaluate your EI skills through assessment. As a student, use assessments as tools to gauge where you are in terms of your development. This is how you improve.

Learn and then practice EI improvement strategies such as identifying your strengths and weaknesses, setting realistic goals, formulating a plan, and checking your progress on a regular basis.

If you aren’t satisfied with your emotional reactions, make an appointment at the campus counseling center to discuss your feelings and get help. Counselors can help you monitor and understand your emotional responses in a confidential setting.
