A PLAN FOR ACTIVE READING

Active reading involves using strategies, such as highlighting and taking notes, that help you stay focused. Active reading is different from reading for pleasure, which doesn’t require you to do anything while you are reading. By choosing active rather than passive reading, you will increase your focus and concentration, understand more of what you read, and prepare more effectively for tests and exams.

These are the four active reading steps designed to help you read college textbooks:

  1. Previewing
  2. Marking
  3. Reading with concentration
  4. Reviewing

With a group of your classmates, share which of these four steps you always, sometimes, or never do. Have one member of the group keep a tally and report results to the class. Are there steps that almost everyone avoids? If so, discuss the reasons why.
