APPLY

Now that you have read and discussed this chapter, consider how you can apply what you have learned to your academic and personal life. The following prompts will help you reflect on chapter material and its relevance to you both now and in the future.

  1. Identify one area in your life in which you need to make changes to become healthier. How do you think becoming healthier will improve your performance in college? What are the challenges you face in becoming healthier?
  2. College life offers many opportunities to meet new people and to develop a new support network. But finding friends and mentors you can trust is not always easy. What steps have you taken so far to meet new people and build a network of support in college? What can you do in future to expand your support network?
  3. If you are not already involved in on-campus activities and clubs, visit your campus’s Web site or student activities office to learn more about the kinds of clubs, organizations, service learning opportunities, sports teams, or volunteer work that are offered. Find at least one activity that seems interesting to you, and learn more about it. When does the group meet and how often? How many students are involved?
  4. Check out some of your fellow students’ profiles on a social media site such as Facebook or Twitter. What kinds of personal information do they share? What kinds of issues are they writing about? Do you think it is important for college students to be careful about the kind of information they post on social media sites? Why or why not?
  5. Use your print or online campus course catalog to identify courses that focus on topics of multiculturalism and diversity. Why do you think academic departments have included these issues in the curriculum? How would studying diversity help you prepare for different academic fields?
