Activity Objective:

In this chapter, you read about developing strong thinking skills. The ability to think through problems and draw rational conclusions is valuable in life and in the workplace. Employers like to know not only what you think but also how you think; that means that in a job interview, they will likely ask how you have solved problems in the past. Complete this activity to demonstrate your use and understanding of the critical-thinking process.

Research

Take the following steps:

  1. Think about a problem you have solved. This problem could have occurred almost anywhere—at work, at home, among friends, in class, and so on.
  2. Refer to the Developing Strong Thinking Skills section in this chapter, and consider which of the following critical-thinking skills you used to solve this problem:
    • asking questions
    • considering multiple points of view before drawing conclusions
    • making arguments
    • challenging assumptions and beliefs
    • examining evidence
    • recognizing and avoiding faulty reasoning
  3. Use the prompts below to explain how you approached this problem using one of the skills above. An example is provided.

EXAMPLE: I remember a situation when I faced a problem. I was working at a restaurant, and the employee who was supposed to submit a restocking order neglected to do so. Unfortunately, the manager scheduled for that day also did not show up for his shift. To solve this problem, I had to ask questions of the other employees. Together we had to figure out which menu items were customer favorites, list them, brief the team on what items would be available, and resubmit an urgent order.

When you have filled in all of the blanks, the “Submit” button will appear. When you are satisfied with all of your responses, select the “Submit” button to send your responses to your instructor. (Note: You will not be able to change your responses after you select “Submit.”)
