Changes in ocean acidity. This map shows estimated changes in the pH of ocean surface water from the 1700s to the 1990s. Seawater pH has decreased in all ocean basins. Ocean surface pH varies geographically because of differences in the activities of organisms, the concentrations of atmospheric CO2, and the effects of ocean currents, stream runoff, and precipitation amounts.
