Ice shelves. (A) Ice shelves form as ice sheets or outlet glaciers flow offshore and float on the water. When the ice shelf breaks, it calves icebergs. (B) This iceberg broke free from an ice shelf in Antarctica in 2002. It is about 220 m (720 ft) thick and rises about 20 m (65 ft) above the sea. It was photographed drifting in the Southern Ocean.
