Effect of prevailing winds on seasonality. New York, New York, is dominated by prevailing winds that originate in the interior of the North American continent. Although New York is coastal, the air masses it receives and, consequently, its annual temperature range are continental. Crescent City, California, in contrast, is dominated by prevailing winds that originate over the Pacific Ocean and, consequently, it has a maritime climate.
