Solar intensity map. This map shows the intensity of solar radiation (in W/m2) striking the ground. The Sun’s intensity on the ground depends on latitude and the persistence of cloud cover. Low latitudes that are cloud free most of the time receive the most intense sunlight. Examples of such areas are the Sahara and the Kalahari Desert in Africa, the U.S. Southwest, and northern Australia. Midlatitude locations at high elevations that are cloud free, particularly the Andes and the Tibetan Plateau, also receive abundant solar energy.
