Adiabatic rates. Starting on the ground, an unstable air parcel at 30°C rises, expands, and cools at the dry adiabatic rate of 10°C per 1,000 m. The parcel°s dew point of 10°C is reached at 2,000 m (the LCL). Above 2,000 m, the air parcel is saturated and cools at a moist adiabatic rate of 6°C per 1,000 m.
