Radiation fog. (A) This satellite image shows the Central Valley of California under an extensive blanket of radiation fog that developed as the cold valley air became saturated. Radiation fog in this region often results in car accidents on freeways due to poor visibility. (B) This radiation fog developed in Alhandra, Portugal, along the Tagus River valley. Alhandra’s central church protrudes above the fog. The photo was taken at 8:00 a.m. before the warm sunlight began evaporating the fog.
