GEO-GRAPHIC: The ocean conveyor belt system. A global system of currents moves heat from the tropics to higher latitudes. The ocean conveyor belt starts in the tropical Atlantic Ocean, where trade winds push the Gulf Stream up the east coast of North America. The Gulf Stream transports 25% of all global heat moving to higher latitudes. The faster it flows, the more heat it delivers to the North Atlantic Ocean and to the atmosphere in the Northern Hemisphere.
