Soil erosion in Georgia. Western Georgia’s Providence Canyon (also called Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon) largely did not exist before 1800. The early settlers used poor farming practices, which triggered soil erosion that led to the formation of gullies, then deep ravines, and eventually canyons 50 m (160 ft) deep. The canyons are still deepening by erosion. Tourists are drawn to the area today to hike in the canyons.
