Journal Entry:
Setting Short- and Long-term Goals

Both long- and short-term goals play a role in helping you achieve what you care about. Having a clear and specific long-term goal can keep you headed in the right direction while you’re in school, and it can provide you with a sense of purpose and meaning. Short-term goals are the stepping stones to long-term goals: They help us organize our actions and provide us with day-to-day momentum as we work toward our long-term objectives.

In this exercise, you’ll have the chance to reflect on a long-term goal that’s important to you, as well as the short-term goals that support it. Write a journal entry in which you respond to the following questions:

  1. What is your long-term goal when it comes to your college education? What do you hope to accomplish with a college degree? Be as specific as you can.
  2. Break your long-term goal into smaller objectives. Reflect on what you’ll need to do each term to be ready to achieve your long-term goal when graduation comes. In addition to coursework, think about additional knowledge, skills, training, and experiences you could develop along the way.
  3. Describe how achieving each of these short-term goals will help you meet your long-term goal. Why are these smaller goals important to your overall objective?
