The Scream by Edvard Munch. This painting is typically interpreted as illustrating the intense terror in a panic attack. According to the text Munch carved into the work’s gilded frame for the second of the four colored versions that he painted, the painting stems from an actual incident in Munch’s life. Munch and two friends were walking on a bridge at sunset when Munch actually experienced the enormous anxiety and melancholy that he brought to life in the painting. He said that he was trembling with fright and felt the great scream in nature.
