Exploring a subject

Writing practice: Exploring a subject

You must click Submit after each text box on the page to record your work in your instructor's gradebook (if your instructor has assigned this activity). After you have clicked Submit, you may review your work (but you may not revise it) by returning to this page at any time.

American author Annie Dillard has written: “There is something you find interesting, for a reason hard to explain. It is hard to explain because you have never read it on any page; there you begin.” What subjects interest you? What questions do you have about those subjects? Choose a question you don’t have an answer to, and use three of the following ways to explore your subject (as explained in your handbook):

  • talking and listening
  • reading and annotating texts
  • observing, brainstorming
  • clustering
  • freewriting
  • gaining expert perspective
  • keeping a journal
  • blogging
  • asking questions
