Evaluating sources you find on the Web

Writing practice: Evaluating sources you find on the web

You must click Submit after each text box on the page to record your work in your instructor's gradebook (if your instructor has assigned this activity). After you have clicked Submit, you may review your work (but you may not revise it) by returning to this page at any time.

Evaluate two web sources that you’ve selected for your research project. Evaluate the authorship, sponsorship, purpose, audience, and currency for each site:

  • Can you find the author's credentials on the site? How knowledgeable and credible does the author seem?
  • Who sponsors the site? Does the URL tell you anything about the type of person or organization? Or is there an "About" page that gives some information?
  • Why was the site created: To argue a position? To sell a product? To inform readers?
  • Who is the site’s intended audience?
  • How current is the site? Is currency important for the site’s topic and purpose?
