New York City Draft Riots, July 1863 Between July 13 and 16, 1863, riots broke out in New York City against the Enrollment Act. Blaming African Americans for the war, working-class mobs lynched, beat, and mutilated dozens of black men. At least 120 civilians were killed and another 2,000 injured. This illustration shows the New York Tribune, an abolitionist newspaper, under attack from rioters. Federal troops were eventually called in to restore peace.
