Washington’s French Allies This late-eighteenth-century painting by James Peale the Elder shows Washington and his generals at Yorktown, site of the final major battle of the Revolutionary War. Among Washington’s generals were the Frenchmen the Marquis de Lafayette and the Comte de Rochambeau. Peale was not at Yorktown, but he fought in the Continental Army for three years.
