Illustration by William Bartram, Naturalist William Bartram was a naturalist from Pennsylvania who traveled through the South during the 1770s. He visited Indian villages and sketched plant and animal life, including alligators and other animals that most Americans had never seen. This drawing of a great yellow bream was among many illustrations that he published in his Travels (1791), a popular compendium of his work.
