Document 1.8 Piri Reis Map, 1513

Piri Reis Map, 1513

The Turkish admiral and cartographer Piri Reis produced another early-sixteenth-century map. While much of the map does not survive, the remaining part includes the western coasts of Europe and North Africa, the eastern coast of South America, and the northern coast of Antarctica. Reis used Portuguese, Ptolemaic, and Arabic maps to produce his version of the world, and the illustrations are detailed and reasonably accurate.
