Philip Dawe | Cartoon on Violence against Loyalists, 1775

For some Americans, choosing sides depended more on immediate, everyday concerns than on ideology or loyalty. The following cartoon, published by Philip Dawe in February 1775, shows a Virginia loyalist being forced by club-wielding patriots to sign a document. It conveys the lengths to which some patriots would go to bring reluctant loyalists to their side.
