Clay Tobacco Pipe, James Fort, Virginia Robert Cotton, a pipe maker from England, arrived in Jamestown in 1608. He copied Indian designs in crafting pipes from Virginia clay. Cotton added decorations and the names of leading men before the clay was fired. These fragments, discovered at an archaeological dig, suggest the importance of local artisans in Jamestown and the interplay of Indian and English styles.
