Cornplanter, Seneca Chief Cornplanter, son of a white father and Seneca mother, fought with the British during the Revolution. Afterward, however, he argued that Indians must adapt to American control. He helped negotiate three treaties that ceded large tracts of Indian land to the U.S. government, arousing opposition from more militant leaders. This 1796 portrait by an Italian artist suggests his mixed heritage.
