Martin Waldseemüller and Mathias Ringmann | Universalis Cosmographia, 1507

In 1507 German cartographers Waldseemüller and Ringmann produced a map of the “known” world, which included those areas in the Western Hemisphere recently discovered by European explorers. They were the first to use the term America, and their Universalis Cosmographia was also the first map to show the Americas as separate from Asia. The map was printed from wood engravings and produced in twelve sections covering 36 square feet.
