George Whitefield Preaching, c. 1760

Paintings and engravings of the Great Awakening highlighted the most famous preachers and the diverse women and men who attended revivals. This painting by English artist John Collet captures an outdoor revival and shows Whitefield’s appeal to a mixed audience of women and men. Collet was known for his satirical images of English life, so it is not clear whether the inclusion of working people and dogs is meant to illustrate or demean Whitefield’s broad appeal.
