The Eleventh Pillar of the Great National Dome, July 1788
Throughout 1788, newspapers like the Massachusetts Centinel traced the results of ratifying conventions state by state. A graphic represented each state that ratified the Constitution as a pillar of the new federal superstructure. The importance of New York State is reflected in the flowery verse above and below “the beauteous DOME.”
