DOCUMENT 1.1 | CHRISTOPHER AND BARTOLOMEO COLUMBUS, Map of Europe and North Africa (c. 1490)

While Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the Americas is well-known, his younger brother Bartolomeo also played a part in the early discovery and exploration of the Western Hemisphere. Bartolomeo was a cartographer and navigator who accompanied Christopher on several explorations. This map is believed to have been produced in the Lisbon workshop of Christopher and Bartolomeo Columbus in 1490, two years before Columbus set sail on his first voyage. It depicts Europe and North Africa and also includes a circular world map on the left.
